What Mumbai buildings actually do to the equipment
Two things drive most of the cost difference on a Mumbai site, and neither appears on a generic quote. The first is salt air. Anything mounted outdoors within a few kilometres of the coast corrodes on a schedule — camera housings, mounting brackets, screws and outdoor junction boxes. Specifying standard indoor-grade hardware for a seafront or dockside position is how an installation looks fine in month three and fails in month fifteen.
The second is vertical geometry and rent. Mumbai floor plates are small and expensive, which means dense seating, riser cabling between floors rather than long horizontal runs, and server rooms that are often a converted cupboard with no dedicated cooling. A rack in an unventilated store room will run hot, and heat is the single largest cause of premature hardware failure in Indian offices.
The monsoon is the third factor and the one most often underestimated. Water ingress at cable entry points, roof-mounted cameras and terrace equipment needs to be designed for, not patched in July.

Do cameras need special housings in Mumbai?

Our server room is a converted store room. Is that a problem?
It is the most common finding on Mumbai sites and it is usually fixable cheaply. The question is whether heat can leave the room. A rack in a sealed interior space will sit well above the temperature the equipment is rated for, which shortens drive and power-supply life. Sometimes the answer is a dedicated split unit; often it is just extraction and rearranging where the rack sits.
