The short answer

An experienced Indian freelance developer typically costs ₹800–₹3,000 an hour against ₹1,500–₹5,000 for an agency doing the same work — roughly 40–60% less, because you are not funding account management, sales or office overhead. For a business website that is ₹7,000–₹1,50,000, and for an app ₹25,000 upwards.

The real trade is cover, not quality. One person cannot be ill and available at the same time, and an agency can. That risk is managed structurally — your repository, your accounts, written scope, staged payments and documentation as the work happens — so that leaving is always possible. If a freelancer cannot explain how you would recover without them, that is the warning sign worth acting on.

Independent, agency, or in-house?

All three are right in different situations, and the wrong one is expensive in both directions. This is the honest comparison, including the cases where I am not the answer.

The honest risk, and what is done about it

The genuine argument against hiring an individual is simple: an agency has cover and I do not. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. What can be done is to make sure that if I became unavailable tomorrow, you would still own a working system and could hand it to someone else in a day rather than a month.

None of the following is a favour. It is the minimum that makes hiring one person a reasonable decision rather than a bet, and it is worth demanding from any freelancer you talk to.

  • Your repository from commit one. Code lives in your GitHub or GitLab organisation, not mine. You see progress as it happens rather than at a demo.
  • Accounts in your name. Hosting, domain, model providers, cloud, analytics — created under your business with you holding billing and the master credentials. I get access you can revoke.
  • Written scope before work starts. What is included, what is excluded, what happens when it changes. Scope arguments happen at quoting time or they happen at invoice time.
  • Staged payments tied to delivery. You are never far ahead of the work. If things stop, you have paid for what exists.
  • Documentation as I go, not at the end. Setup, deployment, environment variables and decisions written down — end-of-project documentation is the first thing to get skipped.
  • Mainstream, boring technology. Next.js, Flutter, PostgreSQL, standard cloud. Anyone competent can pick it up. A clever framework only I know is lock-in dressed as craft.
  • No exit friction. If you want to move to an agency or an in-house team, you get everything and I help with handover. Keeping clients by making leaving painful is not a business model I want.

How an engagement runs

1. A real conversation

Twenty minutes on what you are trying to achieve — not what you think you need to buy. Some of these end with me saying you do not need the thing.

2. Written, itemised quote

Within 24 hours. Line items, exclusions, timeline and payment stages, so you can compare it against anyone else's honestly.

3. Build in the open

Your repository, visible progress, short check-ins. No month-long silences followed by a reveal.

4. Handover you own

Code, accounts, credentials and documentation, all in your name. Plus support afterwards if you want it, and a clean exit if you do not.

FAQ

Hiring a freelancer — common questions

How much does a freelance web developer cost in India?

For a business website, ₹7,000–₹1,50,000 depending on scale, and ₹25,000 upwards for an app. On a time basis, experienced Indian freelance rates run roughly ₹800–₹3,000 an hour, against ₹1,500–₹5,000 an hour for an agency covering the same work. The difference is mostly overhead — account managers, sales staff and office costs that do not touch your project.

Is hiring a freelancer riskier than an agency?

It carries a different risk, and it would be dishonest to say otherwise. One person can fall ill, take on too much, or simply stop replying — an agency has cover. What reduces that risk is structural rather than reassuring: code in your own repository from day one, accounts in your name, written scope, staged payments tied to delivery, and documentation as you go. Ask any freelancer how you would recover if they vanished. The answer tells you a lot.

Do you work alone or with a team?

Alone on the technical work, which is the point — you deal with the person doing it. For on-site jobs across India I schedule vetted local technicians for cabling, mounting and installation, coordinated and quality-checked by me. You always know who is coming and what they are doing.

Can you sign an NDA and a contract?

Yes to both, always, before any access is granted. Every engagement has a written scope, a payment schedule and an intellectual-property clause confirming the work is yours on payment. Freelance does not mean informal.

How do payments work?

Staged against delivery rather than upfront in full — typically a start payment, one or two milestone payments, and a balance on handover. For retainers, monthly in arrears. Razorpay, UPI and bank transfer, with a GST invoice for every payment.

What if I need support after the project ends?

Either a support retainer, an AMC for hardware, or ad-hoc paid work at an agreed rate — whichever fits. Because everything is handed over documented and in your accounts, you are also free to take it to anyone else, and that is a genuine option rather than a polite fiction.

How quickly can you start?

Usually within one to two weeks for development work, and within days for a site survey in Bengaluru. I take on a limited number of projects at a time, so the honest answer varies — I will tell you my actual availability rather than promise a start date and then queue you behind other work.

Do you work with clients outside Bengaluru?

Yes. Development, AI, cloud and marketing work is delivered remotely worldwide and most of my clients are not in Bengaluru. Only physical work — cameras, cabling, servers — needs a site visit, and that runs across India on a scheduled basis.

Why should I hire you rather than an agency?

If your project needs several specialists working in parallel to a hard deadline, or you need contractual cover that survives one person being unavailable, hire an agency — I will say so. Hire me when you want the person writing the code to be the person you talk to, when you would rather not pay for a sales layer, and when you want honest advice about what not to build.
