AI visibility
How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
By Samuel Marndi · Updated
The short answer
There is no way to pay for placement in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity answers. These systems cite sources that are structurally easy to extract, factually specific, marked up with schema, and corroborated elsewhere on the web. Anyone selling guaranteed AI rankings is selling something that does not exist.
In practice, the work that gets you cited is: put a direct answer at the top of every page, publish concrete numbers instead of adjectives, mark up your organisation, services, locations and FAQs with schema, keep your name, address and phone consistent across directories, publish an llms.txt index, and earn genuine third-party mentions.
What makes a page easy for an AI to cite
- A direct answer in the first 100 words, phrased as a complete standalone statement rather than a teaser
- Specific numbers, ranges and dates — 'from ₹2,000 per camera' is citable, 'affordable pricing' is not
- Tables and definition lists, which parse far more reliably than prose paragraphs
- Question-shaped headings, because that is the shape of what people ask an assistant
- Schema markup for Organization, Service, FAQPage, LocalBusiness and Breadcrumbs
- Server-rendered HTML. Content that only appears after JavaScript runs is frequently invisible to these crawlers
- Dates and authorship, so a system can judge whether the information is current
llms.txt — what it is and whether it matters
llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site that lists your key pages with one-line descriptions, in the way robots.txt lists crawl rules. It is a young convention and not yet universally consumed, but it costs almost nothing to publish and it makes your site's structure explicit rather than inferred.
It is not a ranking mechanism, and it will not rescue a site that has nothing worth citing. Treat it as a courtesy that occasionally helps rather than as a strategy.
The part most businesses skip
Corroboration. These systems weight information that appears consistently in more than one place, which means your business details on directories, industry listings, review platforms and social profiles all need to match your website exactly — same business name, same phone number format, same address.
Inconsistent listings are the single most common reason a local business is absent from AI recommendations while its competitor is present. It is unglamorous work and it is usually the highest-return hour you will spend.
- Google Business Profile, complete, with categories and service areas set correctly
- Consistent name, address and phone across every directory that already lists you
- Industry-specific listings for your sector
- Genuine reviews on platforms buyers actually read
- Mentions and citations from local news, associations or partner sites
How to check whether it is working
Ask the assistants directly, the way a customer would: 'who does CCTV installation in Bhubaneswar', 'best IT consultant for a small business in Bengaluru', 'how much does a website cost in India'. Note whether you appear, which page is cited, and what the summary says about you.
Repeat monthly. The answers change as these systems re-crawl, and the specific page they cite tells you which of your pages is doing the work — which is usually a cost guide or an FAQ, not your homepage.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. There is no advertising placement in the answer itself in these assistants today. Any agency offering guaranteed AI rankings is describing something that does not exist.
Does traditional SEO still matter?
Yes, substantially — several assistants ground their answers in live web search results, so ranking well still feeds AI visibility. The two disciplines overlap far more than they differ.
How long does it take to appear in AI answers?
Weeks to months after the content exists and is crawled, and it varies by assistant. Pages with clear direct answers and schema tend to get picked up faster than long unstructured articles.
Is this the same as SEO?
Mostly. The differences are emphasis: AI systems reward extractable structure and factual specificity more heavily, and links slightly less, than classic search ranking does.
