Office network setup cost in India: what a per-point quote actually contains

The short answer

Indian network cabling is normally quoted per point — one desk outlet, cabled back to the rack, terminated at both ends and tested. Built up from its parts, a Cat6 point in a typical office lands around ₹1,000–₹2,000 including cable, keystone jack, faceplate, patch panel port, patch cords, labour and testing. Long runs, false ceilings, conduiting through finished walls and multi-floor risers push it higher; a large open floor with short parallel runs pushes it lower.

Cabling is usually the smaller half of the bill. Switches, a firewall, business access points, a rack and a UPS typically cost as much again or more, and for a 50-seat office the complete active-plus-passive network commonly lands in the ₹4–₹12 lakh range depending on how much resilience and security you buy. Anyone quoting a network without asking about floor plate, ceiling type and internet links is guessing.

What is inside a per-point price

"₹1,400 per point" tells you nothing until you know what a point includes. Every credible quote in this market bundles the same seven things, and the cheap quotes are cheap because they have quietly dropped two or three of them.

Ask any vendor to break the number down this way. The ones who can are the ones who have actually costed the job.

The passive side — cabling, rack, patch panels — is what people ask about, but the active equipment is where budgets are won and lost. Below is a realistic shape of a 50-seat build in a Tier-1 Indian city in 2026. Treat every figure as indicative until a survey confirms it; the point is the proportions, not the precision.

The decisions that move the price most

  • Cat6 or Cat6A. Cat6 handles 1 Gbps comfortably and 10 Gbps over short runs; Cat6A is built for 10 Gbps across the full 100 m and costs meaningfully more to buy and to install. For most offices Cat6 to the desk and fibre or Cat6A between floors is the sensible split.
  • How many points per seat. One is the modern default with Wi-Fi carrying laptops; two is worth it where desks host a phone and a docked machine, or where you want spare capacity without reopening ceilings later.
  • PoE budget. Access points, IP phones and cameras all draw power over the cable. Undersizing the PoE budget on the switch is the most common design error in Indian office networks and it surfaces months later as devices that reboot at random.
  • Retrofit or bare shell. Cabling a shell before interiors go in costs a fraction of cabling the same floor after the false ceiling and partitions are up. If you have any choice in the sequence, cable first.
  • Redundancy. A second internet link with automatic failover, a spare switch on the shelf and dual power to the rack are all optional until the day they are not. Price them explicitly rather than discovering they were excluded.
  • Certified testing. Insist on a per-link test report. It is the only proof that the ₹1,400 point actually performs, and it is the line vendors drop first when asked to sharpen a quote.

How to compare two cabling quotes fairly

Two quotes for the same office can differ by 60% and both be honest, because they are not describing the same work. Before comparing totals, normalise them: same point count, same cable category, same brand tier for jacks and panels, same switch PoE budget, same test-and-document scope, patch cords included in both.

Then ask three questions that reliably separate the careful from the cheap. Who owns the port map and labelling after handover? What is the warranty on the passive installation, and does it come from the cable manufacturer or just the installer? And what happens to the price if the point count changes by ten either way — a vendor who cannot answer that has not costed the job, they have guessed it.

You still need cabling — every access point is itself a cabled device, and so are cameras, printers, IP phones and anything that must not drop. Wi-Fi replaces the cable to the laptop, not the cable to the ceiling. An office designed as Wi-Fi-only usually ends up cabled anyway, at retrofit prices.

Why is a retrofit so much more expensive?

Because labour, not cable, is most of the cost, and labour in a finished building means working above installed ceilings, through partitions and around occupied desks, often outside business hours. The same points in a bare shell before interiors go in can cost a fraction as much. If you are fitting out a new office, cable before the ceiling closes.

What should I insist on at handover?

A certified test result for every link, a labelled patch panel matched to a port map, a rack photograph, the as-built drawing, and admin credentials for the switches and firewall in your business's name.
