# How many CCTV cameras do I need? A room-by-room method

## Short answer

**Camera count comes from what you need to prove afterwards, not from the size of the building.** As orientation: a small shop or clinic needs 2–4 cameras, a restaurant or showroom 4–8, a two-floor office 8–16, a school 16–40+, and a factory or apartment complex 16–64+.

The method that produces the right number is simple: list the specific events you would want footage of — a theft at the counter, a delivery dispute at the gate, an accident in a corridor — then place a camera where each of those events would be identifiable, not merely visible.

## Typical camera counts by premises

## The four positions that earn their cost first

If budget only stretches to four cameras, those four positions beat eight cameras spread evenly for the appearance of coverage.

- **Every entry and exit point**, including the ones staff use and the ones you forgot about
- **Wherever money or valuables change hands** — the counter, the till, the cash office
- **Stock and stores**, because internal shrinkage is more common than break-ins
- **Blind corners and rear access**, which is where anything deliberate happens

## Identification versus detection — the distinction that decides resolution

A camera that shows you someone was there is doing detection. A camera that shows you who it was is doing identification, and it needs far more pixels on the target — which in practice means either higher resolution or a much closer, tighter shot.

This is why a coverage map matters more than a camera count. It shows what each camera can actually resolve at the distance it is mounted, and it is the document that stops you discovering the limitation on the day you need the footage.

## Questions to ask before buying

- How many days of footage will this configuration retain, in writing?
- At what distance can each camera identify a face, not just detect a person?
- What happens to recording during a power cut?
- Which cameras are on the same cable run, and what fails together?
- Is remote viewing being secured, or left on default credentials?
