Choose fingerprint for cost and simplicity in clean indoor environments, face recognition where hygiene, speed or buddy-punching matter, and cards or PINs where volume is high and identity assurance is less critical. Many sites do best with cards for general access and biometrics only on sensitive doors. ## Technology comparison | Method | Device cost | Strengths | Weaknesses | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Fingerprint | ₹2,500 – ₹12,000 | Cheap, well understood, hard to share | Struggles with worn, wet or dirty fingers; contact hygiene | | Face recognition | ₹8,000 – ₹25,000 | Contactless, fast, hard to spoof or share | Lighting and positioning sensitive; more data-protection duty | | RFID card | Low | Fast, cheap at volume, easy to reissue | Cards get shared — it does not prove who was there | | PIN | Lowest | No hardware to lose | Shared and shoulder-surfed constantly | | Combination (card + biometric) | Higher | Real assurance on sensitive doors | Slower, costs more per door | ## The questions that matter more than the device - **What happens in a power cut?** Fail-safe or fail-secure must be decided per door, with manual release and fire-alarm integration. Any quote that skips this is unsafe - **Does attendance export into payroll**, or will someone retype it every month? - **Are shift rules, late marks and overtime configurable** to your actual policy rather than the device's defaults? - **Anti-passback** — needed at gates and secure areas so one credential cannot admit a queue - **Where is biometric data stored**, who can access it, and what is your consent process? - **What happens when the device fails?** Spares availability and a manual fallback procedure ## Integrating with payroll The value of an attendance system is almost entirely in what happens to the data afterwards. A device that produces a CSV somebody retypes into payroll has automated the punch and nothing else. Insist that export or sync into your payroll or HR system is part of the scope, tested with a real month of data before handover — including how you correct a wrong punch, which is the thing your HR team will do most often. ## Related questions ### Is face recognition better than fingerprint? Faster, contactless and harder to share, which matters for hygiene and buddy-punching. It also costs more, is sensitive to lighting and mounting position, and carries greater responsibility for handling biometric data. Neither is universally better. ### Can attendance data be edited? Corrections should be possible and logged. A system where an administrator can silently alter records is a payroll dispute waiting to happen — insist on an audit trail. ### Do we need consent to collect biometric data? You should be documenting consent and your retention policy as a matter of course, and telling employees what is collected and why. Treat biometric records as your most sensitive data category. ## Related service - [CCTV & biometric access control](https://samuelmarndi.com/services/cctv-access-control/) — Site survey, cameras, NVR, biometric doors --- *Published by [Samuel Marndi](https://samuelmarndi.com), independent IT consultant, Bengaluru, India.
